SEGA PROFITS: ARCADE GOOD, HOME DIVISION BAD...
It's not as tough as all that, but Sega appears to be slipping when it comes to the console market
15:14 Sega, purveyor of consistently ace, if quirky titles, has today posted a 42 percent drop in quarterly net profit, cutting full-year revenue forecasts by three percent.
The Japanese company's net profit totalled 1.72 billion yen ($16.3 million) for the quarter ending December 31st; the same period in the previous year reaped profits of 2.97 billion yen. Revenue dropped by 8.1 percent to 51.04 billion yen, but operating profit increased by three percent to 4.9 billion yen; this was attributed to reductions in development and promotional costs.
With key titles like Sonic Heroes slipping, Sega has been forced to lower its entire sales estimate for 2003/2004 fiscal year by 11 percent to 8.35 million units. For the full-year dated to March 31, 2004, Sega's sales forecast is slashed from 195.7 billion yen to 190 billion yen.
Nonetheless, the company maintained its operating profit forecast of 14 billion yen and net profit estimate of 8 billion yen, thanks in part to strong profits from its coin-operated arcade division.
Expected profits from arcade titles will total 11.5 billion yen, a rise of 15 percent compared to previous expectations. All of which, disastrously, seems to bear out major shareholder Sammy's theory that a reliance on coin-op arcade games is the way forward.
Indeed, Sega has confirmed that it will continue to slash development, promotional and other related costs from its consumer division. Gutted. We'll be keeping a tight eye on Sega's plans in the coming months...
