Rumor: Final Fantasy Remakes On the Show Floor
We haven't reported a rumor in a long time, but here's an older (and juicy) one that has recently recurred.
Way back when Square expressed interest in developing for the GameCube prior to the system's launch, much buzz surrounded what they could possibly do together with the technology of today. Game Informer even reported it's own rumor that a new version (or even a sequel) to the PSX smash Final Fantasy VII was in the works, in addition to an all new game.
Later down the road, Square executives expressed a desire to port all the NES and SNES Final Fantasy's to the Game Boy Advance, in addition to the already released Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and an all new 'FF' RPG for the handheld. We even broke the news here on Nintendojo of a possible Parasite Eve sequel for the GameCube and PS2.
As you can see, the only thing that has come of their relationship is Crystal Chronicles and the aforementioned handheld strategy game. However, Miyamoto and other Square-Enix employess *did* suggest that the deal established with Crystal Chronicles would extend further beyond that one title.
Long story short, the newest buzz is somewhat a melding of all the previous rumors, in that all the Final Fantasy's 7-9 that released on the PSX may be ported and updated on Nintendo's machine, ala Metal Gear Solid & Resident Evil, two other games Nintendo fans missed out on last generation. These games will purportedly debut at this year's E3 in May.
More on this rumor when -- or more accurately, IF -- it develops. (wj)
