Adrian Lacey
I thought I would start our second official Rayman Raving Rabbids blog by explaining some of the adjustments that were made to maximise the innovative qualities of the Wii controller and hardware.
When we were at concept stage and the bunnies were a mere twinkle in the artist’s eye, we received the first dev kits from Nintendo. One of the programmers started doing a series of tests looking at the diverse movements and functions the controllers could give to the player and ultimately the character of Rayman. After many different movements and late night testing we started to work off the principle of using the controls as extensions of Rayman’s hands and essentially the player’s hands. This allowed us to create an interaction for the player that was natural and corresponded very well to actions of the in-game character.
This led to the next stage of design. Traditional Rayman games were very focused on the normal action adventure platformer style, but we wanted to give the player the ability to use as many different functions of the "Wii-mote" as possible, hence the decision to make a series of very diverse trials within the Rayman universe. We started to work on basic but exhilarating moves such as running, based off the accelerometers, which allowed the player to shake both pads up and down making Rayman sprint across the island. See IGN's Rayman video section. The accelerometers also allowed us a new way to control Rayman's sky diving skills. Basically you tilt the remote forward and Ray assumes a fast diving position; backwards and he opens up and slows down; and then left and right tilting gives him direction. This gives the player a very satisfying sense of immersion and controls are very natural.
One of my favorites and one that you can play with up to four people is “Bunnies can’t milk cows." This one just makes me laugh, it is just simply ridiculous. Basically you have a Cow and then you take the controllers and shake them up and down in a milking motion as though they are udders – yes, sort of cow nipples -- and the faster you shake the faster your bucket is full of cow juice (milk!). This is an office favorite as seeing adults shaking imaginary udders is simply hysterical.

When it came to developing the depth and variety of the controls we took simple movements and then built on them to increase the skill level necessary by the player. This didn’t always work, though. For example, take the original movement for the skipping the chain challenge. In the original version the player had to spin the rope with the remote and jump in time with the nunchuk. We tested it on several players, but they found it really hard to carry out both simultaneously. It is a bit like when you try to rub your belly with one hand and pat yourself on the head with the other hand whilst whistling a song! In the end we reduced it to a timing and jumping motion only, but we discovered that more aggressive "dual" movements featured in such games as carrot juice worked well. In this game you have to use the remote to aim the jet of juice into the Rabbids mask, and the nunchuk to pump up and down in order to keep the juice flowing.
The diversity of the movements was always an extremely integral part of the design process for Rayman Raving Rabbids. On the Wii we use well over 35 different combinations of Wii-mote movements, and an array of multiplayer turn based, as well as simultaneous 1-4 multiplayer games to get everyone involved in the fun! We have really pushed the hardware’s new functions to give loads of completely absurd movements for gamers to do in the privacy of there own home.
